Niger, a landlocked country in West Africa, home to large swathes of the Sahara Desert, has had a tumultuous political history and faces a very struggle for survival to this day. A former European Colony, Niger has bounced from elected civilian leaders and military coups ever since. This, paired with the slow, inevitable march of desertification and violent religious extremist organizations leaves the populace in a vulnerable state.
What We've Done
Between September 11-19, 2017, IMPL. PROJECT hired and trained 14 local enumerators from Tera, Yatakala, Bankilare, Dolbel, and Petelkole, Niger. A total of 2,397 community perception surveys and 40 qualitative engagements were completed. All engagements and surveys were conducted in-person, are anonymized, and geo-tagged.
Programming Recommendations
Establish Community Governance Entities
In areas where official governance has lapsed, citizens banding together to provide mutual support would stave off the lure of radicalization as well as assist with food and water insecurity.
Consistent Presence by the government, security forces and NGOs
The presence of legitimate authorities and outsiders here to help would have the same effect as community governance nodes, with the added effect of the government getting to see just how dire the situation some of their citizens are in.
