Located in the western Pacific Ocean, the Philippines is an archipelagic nation between Indonesia and Taiwan’s maritime border. It is the 12th largest country in the world, and has hundreds of ethnic cultures and distinct languages, as well as an interesting history.
What We've Done
From 2015 until the present, IMPL. has had a presence in the Philippines working on a myriad of different projects country-wide.
The team started in the far south of the country on the Island of Mindanao, working primarily on livelihood projects to keep out of school youths from finding themselves a recruit of a violent extremist organization.
In the early 2000s, IMPL. changed focus to the Northern Philippines fisherfolk communities. These communities who live and die by their catch were having trouble making enough to survive due to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) draining the local fisheries. By establishing cooperatives, IMPL. has empowered the fisherfolk to take a stand against local IUU fisherfolk, as well as raise awareness of the foreign countries illegally draining the country’s maritime resources.
Programming Recommendations
IUU
Hundreds of traditional fishing communities across the Philippines are faced with a dwindling catch year after year. We empower each fisherman to be a sensor for IUU across the South China Sea to inform policy decisions.
