Chicago is the third most populous city in the U.S. and the cultural hub of the Midwest. Situated along the shores of Lake Michigan, the “Windy City” is diverse both economically and demographically, and regrettably also sports one of the highest crime rates in the country.
What We've Done
A team of 19 enumerators collected data from residents of the Austin and North Lawndale neighborhoods using mobile survey software. Questions included demographics, as well as questions regarding respondent’s perceptions on the greatest drivers of instability as well as levels of trust in legitimate governance nodes.
This data was then collated and assessed using state-of-the-art analytical tools. With a sufficient number of surveys completed, the team was able to establish a baseline, or starting point, from which all future interventions and potential solutions could be measured against.
Programming Recommendations
Educational and Vocational Opportunities: In addition to gang violence, respondents to the survey also mentioned lack of livelihoods as their biggest grievance.
Data-map other Neighborhoods: With only two of Chicago’s neighborhoods data-mapped, a broader survey could provide valuable insight into the vulnerabilities of the city across all sections.
